US Navy Oiler Runs Aground, Forcing Carrier Strike Group to Scramble for Fuel

I HATE THIS STORY. But what it demonstrates is the fragility of our maritime logistics system to support the fleet.

With just 14 fleet oilers, 2 Supply class fast combat stores ships and 12 dry cargo/ammo ships, we don't have much depth in the fleet to support multiple strike group deployments, routine operations and training. The 3 Lewis class oilers have not completed or past post-delivery acceptance.

I do remember an aircraft carrier running aground in SF bay. Returning from a long deployment. The TV news showed all the 1500 or so sailers standing on a corner of the deck trying to rock it loose. Stupid.

I learned that the Navy’s VLS vertical launch system cannot be reloaded at sea, they can only be reloaded at port.

So if and when a destroyer fires all of her VLS missiles, it must return to a port to rearm. The VLS cannot be reloaded at sea.

That is an excellent idea! The dip$hits in the Pentagon, who have TEN more $15Billion aircraft carrier bullseyes in the pipeline, would never have thought of it.

I guess since the Taliban never tried it, the Navy brass decided they didn’t have to worry about such mundane things. They could go back to planning the USN victory over China.

Three Carriers for the planes
Seven destroyers for the missiles
Nine replenishment ships
One oiler to rule them all

It's the USNS BigHorn that was run aground off the coast of Oman.

They apparently tried, but by mid-1943 the U-boats of every type were being sunk readily:

“The Type IXB Uboat that was used off the east coast of the USA had a range of about 14,000 miles at about 12 mph on the surface.”

Those painted stripes on the stack are present in photos from over ten years ago, so there’s no connection to Ukraine.

Will the Navy finally uh, get on board and demand wind and solar powered vessels? It could bump up their ‘esg’ score. /S

No those colors at the funnel have nothing to do with Ukraine. That is what designates that vessel as a Military Sealift Command ship (MSC). A USNS Whatever.
