Maybe the principle members she knew in childhood and adolescence are dead by now. She made her life in CA, and it's a long way to Jamaica when you are starting out, so she didn't get in the habit. Also, when parents divorce, in her case pre-adolescence, often one of the families gets shoved aside, and there are sad or angry feelings among the children that the custodial parent (Indian) may have blamed on the other side of the family.
