A California mayor allegedly got rocked by a homeless man, who randomly decided to sucker punch him. The attack happened in broad daylight.
Marysville City Councilman Dom Belza said via the New York Post that a homeless man attacked him and Mayor Chris Branscum. The California mayor was downtown assessing damage to a historic building. That's when the attack happened.
"We were standing on the sidewalk near the site having a casual conversation. An individual was crossing at the crosswalk. And right as he got to the mayor, who had his back turned, the individual reached back and swung and hit him right square in the back," Belza said. "There was no communication, no altercation. There was nothing that instigated the punch. It was just a complete random act of violence."
Meanwhile, the California mayor said the attacker came out of no where. He said, "I thought I was hit by a car. I was hit so hard. The next thing I know, there's this guy sliding by me, running, and I yelled an expletive at him."
Authorities later identified the suspect as 36-year-old Derek Hopkins. They charged him with eight charges including assault of a public official. Belza ended up chasing after the suspect and actually apprehended him himself.
California Mayor Attacked
"I saw the attacker take off running down the street, so instinct kicked in, and I ran after the attacker," Belza said. "As I was gaining on him, and we were about halfway down the block, he turned around and saw me over his shoulder."
Belza said the homeless man struck him, but he wasn't going down without a fight.
"After that, I engaged him and took him down to the ground and restrained him until the chief of police was able to get there. We held him in custody until he was officially arrested," Belza said.
Meanwhile, Belza said the attack on the California Mayor is a sign of rising crime in towns across California. "In a bigger light and a larger picture of this whole situation, this is something that we're dealing with on a regular basis," he said. "Maybe not necessarily where an elected official gets attacked. But where there's many more of these types of crimes and these types of attacks in communities across California."
"It speaks to a much bigger issue in the state. This attack is really a result of the soft-on-crime policy that California has implemented over the last 10 years," he said.
HA HA
Just imagine how much more attention the crime would get if it was a representative or even a senator rather than mere mayor.
I wonder if all the rest of the self-proclaimed “Elites” are paying attention?
Any chance the mayor *isn’t* a raving leftist looney?
Don’t turn your back on anybody. Learn that.
Marysville. A beautiful town back in 1968, but even then there were bums all over the place. Just across the river from Yuba City where Juan Corona murdered so many migrant workers in the years around 1970. No guns involved.
SURPRISE
Based on the councilman saying this:
“”It speaks to a much bigger issue in the state. This attack is really a result of the soft-on-crime policy that California has implemented over the last 10 years,”
I’m guessing they are not raving loony leftists. Marysville is in Yuba county, a rural area in the Sierra. Most of rural California is MAGA.
Any chance the mayor *isn’t* a raving leftist looney?
I searched around a bit on the Net and couldn’t find any party affiliation for the Mayor.
But from comments made by him after the incident, he doesn’t sound like a Dem. Marysville is also in Yuba County, one of the few dependable GOP counties in California. On the local level, Marysville is represented in the Legislature by a GOP state senator and a GOP state house member.
Cannot find any party affiliation.
According to one report, mayor thinks this type of behaviour is unacceptable and is looking for ways to clean up homeless encampments. He also thinks that lawlessness is because of lax prosecution and penalties. He is retired businessman. Doesn’t sound like a leftie or progressive.
.
If he wasn’t mayor, the police would have arrested him and let the homeless perp go.
Before I would deign to comment I would want to know who the good councilman Belza voted for in the last election for Governor of California and President of the US.
I don’t care if Belza was a lefty or hard right, guys who do this need to be lined up against the wall and shot. If that happened even once in that county I would bet big money it would not happen again for a half century.
IF an Illegal Alien in California commits an act of violence against a Public Employee, should it even be a crime?
The average guy doesn’t get this level of help and protection. The govt and media think he deserves it and encourages it, if hes white and the attacker is black.
Marysville/Yuba city-the ‘twin cities’ as they were called in the 70’s when the total population was 25k. Beale AFB. The front gate was miles from the main part so that the airmen wouldn’t qualify for remote pay. Deadsville. As for Juan Corona those migrant farm workers really discriminated against those from another part of Mexico-sick.
I don't know about the remote pay decision but the runway at Beale AFB appears to be about 750 ft from the main gate. I don't know how much farther from town they could move it.
I was there. y/ou may be right but I don’t believe you. It’s like Dan Rather-fake but accurate.
Any relation to Governor Gavin Newscum?
That gate is no longer used. Mostly because it was too close to the main runway for the U2’s.
