Two U.S. Marines from the USS Wasp were attacked during a port visit in Izmir, Turkey, the U.S. Sixth Fleet said Monday.
The Marines, wearing civilian clothes, were assaulted by a group of two women and 13 men who are members of the Turkish Youth Group, according to the Izmir Governorship, the local governor's office, in a post on X, formerly Twitter. The Turkish Youth Union is a national youth and student group that has an anti-American and anti-imperialist stance. They are linked to the Turkish "Vatan Party," a nationalist political party in Turkey.

Get our nukes out of Turkey… on the QT if necessary.
“Get our nukes out of Turkey”
It’s a National Security imperative.
Is this the same incident reported earlier about two sailors from the USS Wasp? Or is this a new/different incident.
I hear some of those Turks have been arrested for attacking the American Marines on liberty. I’m surprised anyone was arrested. Those Turk troublemakers probably thought they were doing President Erdogan’s bidding. Erdogan seems to be at war with anyone not Islamic. Yet, he can’t understand why the United Nations does not want him included.
They appear to be different, but I’m used to stories being “clarified” later.
What strategic military advantage does Turkey offer NATO (or us for that matter)? All I ‘ve heard in the last few years is how out of step they are from American interests. What do we get out of this relationship?
This is the same incident. Erdogan has got the entire nation whipped up in a frenzy about Gaza. I’m very surprised that you don’t see more of it.
Have you heard his rhetoric?
“The rally was attended by leaders of other political parties, as well as high-profile media and sports figures – some of whom were expected to take to the stage during the event, local media reported.
“Erdogan told the crowd that Western powers were “the main culprit” behind the Israeli army’s “massacre” of Palestinians in Gaza.
“The main culprit behind the massacre unfolding in Gaza is the West,” said.
Al Jazeera’s Osama Bin Javaid, reporting from the rally, said this was “by far one of the strongest speeches that we’ve heard” from the president.
Protesters were seen wearing headbands with inscriptions such as “We are all Palestinians”, “End the genocide”, or “Be the voice of Palestinian children”.

First sentence in OP: Two U.S. Marines from the USS Wasp ...
If the fools in DC had the knowledge of the history of the area that you do, they’d stop making these boneheaded decisions every day.
“They appear to be different, “
Two marines
USS Wasp
Sounds similar
Thanks for clearing it up for me! 🙂
I’m aware that Erdogan has no love for the US, appears to be taking Turkey in a more Islamic fundamentalist direction, and appears to be on friendlier terms with Russia. But I must admit I have blind spots on some things happening in current events. The situation in Turkey is one of them.
But my thanks to you again for bringing me up to speed! 🙂
Yes. Erdogan is a Muslim. However,
As of August 2024, Turkey's inflation rate is 61.80%, which is higher than the long-term average of 27.71%. This is 12 times the official target. The inflation rate in Turkey has been in double digits since the second half of 2019, with inflation accelerating at its fastest rate in 2022.
So did the Marines kick those losers’ a**es???
My thanks to you as well for confirming they are the same incident! 👍
Why do you think Erdogan is so interested in channeling the people’s rage?
They were hugely outnumbered.
