Yes Sowell does that very well.
I learned it from a friend who was recruited strongly to a top university out of high school. The school wanted to increase the number of black females for show. She went but dropped out and said it would’ve been better if she’d gone to a second tier school.
I used to live in Nashville and in the early days of “Newschannel 5+” being on cable they had a call in show. The guest was an old black gentleman who was going on and on about how forced desegregation of ALL schools public or private was the answer to addressing education inequality in the inner city. I called in, asked:
“Do you believe that all schools should be forcibly desegregated?” Yes
“Does that apply regardless of school type?” Yes
“You know what? Me too! I think we should start with Fisk and TSU”.
And to his credit the host of the show asked the guest about it. “What do you think about that? Should they be forcibly desegregated?” His answer? Well, that’s different. You see, they’re private schools and have to do what they have to do to be financially viable.
And the host didn’t dump me after my last question. He kept me on and asked “Did that answer your question?” I replied “No, but it was the answer I was expecting”.
It’s ALWAYS been (D)ifferent.
If the Left didn’t have hypocrisy they’d have very little at all.
Yours was an excellent call. Well done. But I believe the old gentleman was incorrect about Tennessee State U. While Fisk was private, I belive TSU was public.
Jonathan Gruber is still a professor at MIT.
