Keir Starmer has confirmed he is looking at banning smoking from some outdoor spaces such as pub gardens.
Smoking could be banned from specified outdoor areas including outside nightclubs and restaurant terraces in a clampdown on tobacco use across the country. Ministers are said to be considering a number of policies as Mr Starmer accelerates plans to make Britain smoke-free.
The Prime Minister confirmed to journalists in Paris that he is looking at changes to smoking laws after leaked documents suggested smoking would be banned in outside sports stadiums, in children's parks, in pub gardens, outside nightclubs, on restaurant terraces, on pavements by universities and hospitals and in Shisha bars.
Asked about the reports, Mr Starmer said: "My starting point on this is to remind everybody that over 80,000 people lose their lives every year because of smoking. That is a preventable death, it's a huge burden on the NHS and, of course, it is a burden on the taxpayer.
"So, yes, we are going to take decisions in this space, more details will be revealed, but this is a preventable series of deaths and we've got to take action to reduce the burden on the NHS and the taxpayer."
The crackdown would be included in the Tobacco and Vapes Bill, which was set out in the King's Speech when Labour was elected to Government. The legislation will extend UK-wide, although the measures may be applied in different ways across the UK.

Do they have sales tax on them there too?
That’s the only reason there are no public bans here. The government is the biggest drug dealer and gangster of all time.
Liberals often push for freedom, until they are in power. Then they become the most Victorian valued people you can imagine.
Boy, these twats can’t help acting like the next Hitler. They get a little power, and they go berserk. It doesn’t sound like he ever read Dale Carnegie’s book “How to Win Friends & Influence People.”
Talk about tone deaf. While talk swirls around speculating about the end of the UK, he’s talking about smoking in public!
The Victorians were some of the biggest smokers during that period...followed by the Edwardians. Victoria's son Edward VII smoked 20 cigarettes a day and 12 cigars. His son George V smoked heavily to the point he had a lung removed, and his son George VI suffered from smoking-related illnesses in his later years. He died at the young age of 56.
Most of your big estates had Smoking Rooms where after dinner, the men retreated to smoke and drink brandy, or play billiards. They put on smoking jackets over their clothing to keep the smell of the smoke away from them.
What is this name Keir? Never seen it before.
That may be true, but that’s not what people think of when you say Victorian values. Most people think that Victorian values is the most stringent values where people had to live the most straightest life possible, monkish.
English Victorian values were most related to morality: Prudishness, sexual restraint and Imperial grandeur.
That’s what I was trying to say. Smoking is a moral issue, in the mind of the liberal. That’s why, once in power, they want to ban it.
The peasants were expected to live that way, spartan, austere and bleak lives, with spirituality or kinship has their only indulgence. The more wealthy ones? “Smoke and drink and roast for me,but not so much availed to Thee!”
Of course, they would never consider that idea owners of the properties make the decisions rather than bureaucrats.
Exactly and that’s what the left wants for us.
Karl Marx didn’t want the end of the European aristocracy. He wanted to replace with himself and his co-horts. They will be privileged and the rest of Europeans will be miserable.
That’s because they’re hypocrites.
80,000 people die every year from smoking? That’s a cost how? These 80,000 are going to die of something, regardless of whether they smoke or not. Pushing their deaths 5-10 years into the future, they will still die, and in the meantime perhaps be an added cost to the British pension ponzi scheme.
You brits voted for this crap. Sadly, you won’t be able to vote your way out.
They are hypocrites, but they want to have it better than everybody else. Leftism is about creating classes of privilege by removing quality and enjoyment of life from the lower classes.
Pick an issue that the left wants you to stop and you’ll find that they want you to stop but they want to continue to enjoy.
I think it’s because we’ve gone as advanced as we can be, for the moment, as a species. So, for them to have the most privileges they have to convince us to lose ours. If some day, we invent new stuff, then they would allow a better life. Just not as good as theirs.
There’s a reason the colonists and the United Kingdom went their separate ways. All the freedoms we have (in theory at least) are guaranteed by our constitution. All the freedoms the British have are subject to the discretion of the government.
Maybe it is today, but you said Victorians, and the same issues with people smoking that Keir Starmer has today were not present in the British Victorian Era.
