Pavel Durov, the CEO and co-founder of the news and messaging app Telegram, has been charged in France with enabling various forms of criminality in the app, French prosecutors said Wednesday.

One of the charges — complicity in administering an online platform permitting illicit transactions by an organized group — carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a fine of 500,000 euros ($555,750), prosecutors said.

On Monday, French President Emmanuel Macron addressed the outrage, writing in a post on X that “The arrest of the head of Telegram on French territory took place in the context of a judicial inquiry in process. It was not in any way a political decision.”

“Telegram publishes a daily report that claims it removes thousands of channels a day for CSAM.“

If they’re removing child porn then why is he being charged with enabling it?

Why not arrest camera manufacturers’ CEOs as well?

The West is imprisoning (social media) oligarchs now.

They’ve out-Putined Putin.

No wonder they hate Russia so much - because there’s no difference between them. Like Hitler vs. Stalin.

The heck it wasn't.

Platform providers are usually exempt from crimes performed using the platform.
It is a very old law, exempting e.g. phone company from liability from crimes committed using phone.
So are delivery services exempt from, say, extorting letters or even mail bombs.

So, the internet companies are, in my understanding, exempt from liability when crimes are committed using their services.

Obviously, not in France!

I guarantee Durov is going to park himself in another country and tell France to pound sand.

Leave France and don't ever return. Let the French exhaust themselves with extradition requests.

Except for Chinese and North Korea we were the first western nation to do this against truth and free speech. Julian Assange and Edward Snowden come to mind...

We are no better than France...

“Relocate from socialist nations and blue states ASAP.”

But I can’t. I make one dollar an hour more than other states and I can’t live without my favorite local thrift store...

I would be giving up way too much to move.
