People didn’t quit because of the “joy”. It was most likely artificial “joy” like joy no one actually felt. It seems to me that they were trying to impress people about how much joy they felt or how much they could be missing out on, while people were miserable just hearing about something they knew was not real joy. These people would have all been better off if they had the real joy of never having heard from her or talked to her. When you are a phoney, people always catch on sooner or later.
