Democratic congressman Bill Pascrell has died at the age of 87.
The New Jersey lawmaker served 28 years for the state's 9th congressional district in the House of Representatives and was hospitalized after an incident last week.
He recently spent 28 days in treatment and needed 'breathing assistance', but then suffered a setback which forced him back into a rehabilitation facility.
'It is with deep sadness that we announce that Bill Pascrell Jr., our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away this morning,' his family said on X.
'As our United States Representative, Bill fought to his last breath to return to the job he cherished and to the people he loved.
'Bill lived his entire life in Paterson and had an unwavering love for the city he grew up in and served. He is now at peace after a lifetime devoted to our great nation America.'
Pascrell had been hospitalized in July for respiratory issues and spent some time in intensive care. He had planned to run for reelection in the House.
The 14-term congressman had been discharged on August 7 but was readmitted to the hospital just four days later.
The fierce Trump critic was the lower chamber's second-oldest member behind Democrat Grace Napolitano of Texas, who is also 87. The oldest member of Congress is Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, who turns 91 next month.

Anyone know if GOP has a candidate for this seat?
Capitol Hill should not resemble an assisted living facility but unfortunately it does.
Profile of Congressional District 9, NJ
The GOP candidate is Billy Prempeh, who probably overachieved a little with 43% in 2022. The district was moved slightly to the right in the latest redistricting, but is still safe for the Rats. Republicans are only 19% of the district.
Congress has become an old folks home.
This has to change.
87 and still in office...I swear these people think they are never going to die plus the money they rake in from politics is more important to them than anything, even a graceful retirement.

A good democrat.
Became a wealthy man “serving the people”. His district will remain Democrat. Likely to be represented by a Muslim despite the large black population. If blacks in Passaic county want representation, they will need to become Republicans.
Generally, what happens is the governor appoints a successor. The Democratic governor will act at light speed as the incumbent has numerous advantages. I’d guess that it would be an extreme uphill slog for a Republican challenger in NJ.
He will continue to vote Democrat—for decades to come.
Paterson NJ looks like a neutron bomb landed on it.
It has to be seen to be believed.
Yeah, I’m biting my tongue too. May the rat bastard RIP.
“Generally, what happens is the governor appoints a successor.”
For Senate vacancies, yes.
For House vacancies like this one, no.
Former mayor of Coty of Paterson, in running for worse Sh*t role in the country. Only recent mayor to avoid jail for corruption Was my Congress critter for number of years before redistricting ......
House members cannot be appointed (unlike the Senate). The NJ governor can order a special election, probably on November 5, to fill the seat for the remainder of the 118th congress. The local ‘rat committee will pick Pascrell’s substitute for the election to the 119th Congress, as NJ held their congressional primaries on June 4.
Rest in peace, Bill. His life was an argument for Congressional term limits.
