It only took one EV semitruck incident. I was expecting a few were needed.

"California lawmakers urge Newsom to put electric vehicle fleet mandate on hold after I-80 truck fire"

I thought that California had veto-proof legislature?

Democrats Gain Veto-Proof Majority in California Legislature (11.13.18)

Is this Tesla fire issue an election year hot potato for veto-proof state legislators?

Also, since worthless career federal lawmakers and renegade states have repeatedly proven that they are enemies of the people imo, it is now up to Democratic and Republican Trump supporters to effectively "impeach and remove" ALL (exceptions?) state and federal lawmakers and executives in November.

In other words, it's now up to Democratic and Republican Trump supporters to support hopeful Trump 47 with a new, Constitution-respecting Congress, new state lawmakers too, not only so that he will not be a lame duck president from the first day of his second term, but will support him to quickly finish draining the swamp.

In fact, let's not allow the anti-Trump media try to fade our memories of what we witnessed on July 13.

I’m shocked it didn’t start an uncontrollable wildfire in that forest.

EVs have had great potential for 125 years.

Interestingly, my great grandfather owned battery factories in Danzig, Germany in the 1895-1927 period. He sold to municipal railways, motorboats, and communications companies. Lead acid batteries weren’t dangerous like today’s lithium batteries. He made a very good living and built himself a fine house in the upscale Langfuhr district around 1910. It survived the war and is still standing looking like the day he built it (except it’s now a duplex or apartments instead of a single-family home).

Unfortunately, the Soviets confiscated all of his factories and holdings in 1945 when he and his sister were given to sundown to leave Danzig. His son (my grandfather) and my dad tried to get compensation in the 60s for the stolen wealth, but got nowhere.

Something like 17 million gallons of water

In my neck of the woods that's more than a quarter million dollars.

Sodium-Ion batteries don't have the same issue with regard to fire, however they are heavier for the same amount of energy storage.

The solution might be to have the batteries located in a separate trailer towed by the truck rather than having it built into the truck itself.

That way no part of the truck would be excessively heavy and thus damaging to roads. Also, truckers could "refuel" quickly by swapping out their spent battery trailer with a fully charged one at a specially equipped truck stop.

This still won't address the need to significantly beef up the power grid to supply power to these updated truck stops, but it would deal with the fire, excessive weight, and long recharge time issues that currently plague EVs.

Fascinating family history. Hopefully you’ve had the chance to revisit the old neighborhood.

Our oldest daughter studied in Sweden during her junior year in college about 17 years ago. She actually took the time to visit Gdansk and find the old family home! She sent me photos and it looks the same as a 1900 photo I have of the building. She talked to some locals and a few of them thought they remembered the family name. It’s Polish “Gdansk” now and all the Germans were kicked out in 1945 after having been there since 1200.

RE: Toxic fumes....

No, not until later on as with the terrible harm caused by the World Trade Center smoke and particulates in people’s lungs and bodies.

Answer to reader’s question: “why do firefighters often let electric vehicle fires just burn out?”

“Besides all the water involved, it can take hours to cool down the battery. Then, once the car is towed to a junkyard, it can reignite. So, it might be better to just let all the fire fuel burn out.”

RE: I heard they were finding dead coyotes in the hills....

What if some drink poisoned water from the fumes billowing out from the sites and the coyotes start growing and growing, their eyes glowing, until they challenge Godzilla? How many little Asian girls will have to chant and sing to settle them down?

“”The solution might be to have the batteries located in a separate trailer towed by the truck””

Similar to my idea for those large ferries that take both cars and people. The ferries will eventually ban the EVs, so why not have the ferry tow a flattop barge where only the EVs can park. If one or more of the EVs burst into flames, they can just cut the rope, and sink the burning barge.

https://www.ttclub.com/news-and-resources/news/press-releases/2023/fire-not-the-only-danger-with-lithium-ion-batteries/

“The toxicity of gases given off from any given lithium-ion battery differ from that of a typical fire and can themselves vary but all remain either poisonous or combustible, or both. They can feature high percentages of hydrogen, and compounds of hydrogen, including hydrogen fluoride, hydrogen chloride and hydrogen cyanide, as well as carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide and methane among other dangerous chemicals.

In terms of hazards to the wellbeing of those in the vicinity of such an incident, one particularly problematic component is hydrogen fluoride (HF). Although HF is lighter than air and would disperse when released, a cloud of vapor and aerosol that is heavier than air may be formed (EPA 1993). On exposure to skin or by inhaling, HF can result in skin burns and lung damage that can take time (hours to weeks) to develop following exposure. HF will be quickly absorbed by the body via skin and lungs depleting vital calcium and magnesium levels in tissues, which can result in severe and possibly fatal systemic effects. The hydrogen content of the released gases can give rise to vapour cloud explosion risks which have the potential to cause significant damage.”

Very nasty stuff. They use it in processing nuclear fuel.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrogen_fluoride

Gas plus water equals HF acid.
