Recently perused a couple of books, one about the ARGO movie caper that the Office of Technical Services of the see eye ehhhh devised, with the cooperation of the then non-Leftist Canada (Parliament met in secret to okay making 6 Americans into Canadians)- with a team of the 6 not seized by Ahmedinegad et al, playing the part of a site inspection team for a sci-fi movie called Argo. They did their inspection, with Iranian new thugs all trying to please them so they’d bring money back for the filming— and they all left... for Canada. When the enemy was in clear view and people took risks. The actual movie ARGO deals with this caper. Seizing the US embassy was because Carter wasn’t tough on the Shah (he was a complete a@@ to our former friend and look how the place has been since then).
