Worked that gate many times. We always had live ammo.

Military bases today are soft targets. The gate guards are split between civilian security (little more than armed mall cops) or Active Duty TAD personnel (out of rate "Temporary Assigned Duty" with minimal small arms training).

They're mostly armed only with 9mm handguns. The majority of M4 rifles and M240 and M2 machine guns are locked up in armories that very few have access to and even fewer have the keys to.

I was AFSC 307x0 in 1976 stationed at McClellan in Sacramento.   My name came up for duty as a Security Police Augmentee.   They put us on a big blue bus and took us to a field in the back base area.   The gave us the long side handle batons and showed us some moves for riot control in case the base perimeter was breached. &nsbp; That never happened and they never called me out again.
