As Acting Secretary of Labor, Julie Su has a very big eraser and she just used it wipe out her own $32.6 billion dollar mistake.
While she was California’s Secretary of Labor, Su oversaw the California Employment Development Department – the EDD – which lost more than $40 billion during the pandemic to homegrown and international fraudsters.
But Su recently forgave $32.6 billion of that debt. How? Because the state owed it to her federal department.
In other words, Su did not even have to borrow from Peter to pay Paul – she just made sure she went from being Peter to being Paul.

I should’ve got in on some of that grub. We couldn’t find workers with the $600 a week + $350 state pandemic money. We got a tiny PPP loan to help with some overhead expenses due to the closures - I should’ve asked for everything!
Yep. That works out to about $110 out of the pockets of every American man, woman and child who is not a Californian.
This is completely corrupt!
Isn’t it fun being generous with other people’s money?
“. . . lost more than $40 billion during the pandemic to homegrown and international fraudsters.”
Is that part of the $35 trillion national debt, or something else.
Even just $40 billion is a tidy sum.
Maybe I’m missing something but how can the Labor Secretary do this? It would seem to me that this would need Congressional approval.
NO!! It's probably $300 to $400 per TAXPAYER!!
This can’t be allowed to occur.
Billions were given to the incarcerated.
Biden gang + Newsom gang, grab the money and forget. Who cares, compared to 35 trillion?
Who is going to stop her? Not Biden’s DOJ.
Corruption is their name...corruption is their game. Public hanging after a fair trial might be suggested by some.
It’s about here in the thread that some California Freeper claims that California is broke because they pay so much to support the ignorant/unsophisticated/lazy citizens of the states in flyover country,
Better idea, put the notice of debt forgiveness in a nose cone and launch a W87 to Sacramento.
There are 40M Californians and 340M Americans. So there are about 300M Americans that are not Californians. Then 32.6B divided by 300M gives about $110 per American. If we assume that every third or fourth person is actually a taxpayer (which is not unreasonable as we are counting children in the 300M figure), then we do get close to your figure of 300-400 per taxpayer. We are simply counting the burden slightly differently - per taxpayer versus per individual. So we are both correct.
But we need to spend $125B to build a high-speed train to nowhere that no one will ride anyway! And we don’t need to support the ignorant/unsophisticated/lazy citizens of the states in flyover country. We have plenty of our own in California and we are busy supporting the ignorant/unsophisticated/lazy citizens of California.
I think that the US House Budget Committee should hold a hearing and propose reducing her Department’s budget by the same amount and ask her the legal authority by which she forgave such a large amount of debut.
God is Watching...
Calculating these estimates is not easy - even to get a ballpark figure. I was able to find some data by looking at the number of jobs the Labor Department estimated, then looking only at full time jobs which is about 71%. Making the problem more complex is the distribution of the salary for these jobs. It’s not normal, it’s very positively skewed so that estimates for the average are poor. Even trying to estimate what the ‘average’ taxpayer will pay will be way off for most.
The good news: while trying to come up with gross estimates I found a ‘billion divided by a million’ calculator. Lots of fun! Too bad we didn’t have one of those for our homework years ago.
