Three men from the Dominican Republic have been extradited to New Jersey to face charges related to a massive "grandparents' scam” that stole millions from elderly Americans in the Northeast, the U.S. attorney announced.
Juan Rafael Parra Arias, 41, Miguel Angel Vasquez, 24, and Jose Ismael Dilone Rodriguez, 34, of Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic, made their initial appearances in federal court in Newark on Monday and were ordered detained while awaiting trial.
The three men are among 11 from the Dominican and 16 overall who were charged in a 19-count indictment on April 29 by U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger.
Sellinger said the defendants "relied on the love and devotion of elderly victims in order to cheat them out of millions of dollars.” The victims in the alleged scheme were from New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts.

The government is doing a GREAT job protecting Americans...just ask them
Sounds to me like the muzzy lovers in this country haven’t had enough of Pedo Joe. They’re beggin’ for four more years of worse. I knew this was going to happen once the politicians started legalizing dope.
My elderly mother got one of these calls - from her "grandson" who was "driving drunk" and "hit a family with his car," was in jail and needed bail $$ and a lawyer ASAP. The "grandson" was on the phone screaming and crying.
My mother asked what his middle name was and they hung up immediately. I told her repeatedly NOT to answer the phone unless she knew who was calling.
I have been getting such calls ever since Covid & earlier.
I never had any kids
Most of the callers sound very young & definitely sound Hispanic.
I sometimes string them along...
Mostly I just swear like mad at them in VERY HIGH DECIBELS.
Seeing this article makes me realize I haven’t had such calls in about 3 + weeks.
My mom would fall for it, if she still knew how to use a phone.
LOL, you are brave to answer the phone without caller ID.
My friend has a business and can’t use caller ID b/c it might be a new client - I told her to get a second number for her business.
