TOKYO — Japan issued a tsunami advisory Thursday after a 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the southern island of Kyushu.
The temblor occurred off the coast of Miyazaki Prefecture at 4:42 p.m. local time (3:42 a.m. ET), at a depth of about 18 miles, according to Japan’s meteorological agency.

Yikes
That’s a medium out here. Didn’t feel it in Tokyo.
Straight across from California who just had a big quake.
That plate is shifting a lot the past day. A 5.1 at Nicaragua at 7:38, a 5.1 at Bolivia at 20:31, a 5.0 at Tonga at 23:03, all CDT, and now this big one at Japan. I hope that’s it.
NHK also has live coverage on its YouTube channel.
Looks like the government is worried that this 7.1 earthquake might be a foreshock.
Wow.
Keep in mind that energy typically works it’s way north and east around the ring of fire until it reaches our west coast as we wait for the long overdue “big one”.
I was out on my late afternoon walk when the ground began to shake violently for about 25 seconds . Announcement from City Hall over the town’s speaker system said it was a huge earthquake but didn’t give any more info . Hurriedly hustled home to make sure all was OK . Happily no problems as the epicenter was in nearby Miyazaki Prefecture . We experienced not one but two 7+ quakes within 28 hours 8 years ago 2 weeks after we moved into our new home !
Funny, I don’t recall any recent ‘big’ quake here, what may seem to be a big quake to those outside California tends to be a yawn to those of us inside.
sorry already had a 5.7 on tuesday night in the southern part of the central valley of california..
Thanks for the links.
I’ve been keeping an eye on the swarm in CA. That’s been a crazy one. Seems to be slowing down a little but it’s still shaking there.
The Iris Seismic Monitor is pretty cool. With them showing quakes up to 5 years back, the planet’s plates are well-defined.
The "yikes" may get worse!
Japan suffered two big earthquakes in quick succession, a 6.9 and then a 7.1 I watched news video from Japan, and the tremors seemed to go on for more than a minute. Here in California, tremors are only a few seconds. Imagine big shaking for more than a minute.
Japanese experts are warning people to brace for an 8 or 9 magnitude earthquake sometime in the next week, based on past history of earthquakes there. An 8 or 9 definitely warrants a "Yikes".
Nope. Japanese authorities are warning people in Japan that an 8 or 9 magnitude quake may happen this week. The 6.9 and 7.1 are just the beginning movements of Pacific plates that my trigger a mega-quake.
