The San Francisco Police Department is touting its fleet of six new surveillance drones as a “game changer” in terms of apprehending criminals.
At a press conference on Tuesday, police officials showed footage shot by drones as they were used to make arrests in two separate auto burglary cases, and to disperse a large crowd that was setting off fireworks in a residential neighborhood on the Fourth of July. Police described the examples as “success stories” of deploying drones for law enforcement.
“Drones have truly been a game changer for our police department,” police Chief Bill Scott said at the press conference. “Think about this: We’ve been without air support for over 24 years, since the early 2000s. And our officers have now a tremendous technology at their fingertips that other law enforcement agencies regularly use.”
The drones are one result of Measure E, a proposition that Mayor London Breed placed on March’s local primary election ballot. That measure, which San Francisco voters approved by a margin of about 9 percentage points, diminished oversight from the city’s Police Commission, changed the parameters for when officers can pursue fleeing suspects and allowed police to deploy certain surveillance technologies without prior approval from the Board of Supervisors.
In addressing a question asked at the press conference about privacy concerns, Scott said the drones — equipped with facial recognition technology — will not fly “passively” around the city. Rather, he said, the drones will only be deployed as part of an active criminal investigation.
For example, in one instance from last month that was shown at the press conference, a stolen car that was being driven was spotted by one of the department’s Flock cameras, colloquially known as license plate readers.

Drones are not needed to help save what’s left of their retail establishments.
Yeah I was recommending “Minority Report” but yes, I think (adults) should watch “They Live”
It was definitely more than a bit against President Reagan and Republicans
But it has a lot of good stuff that was almost prophetic
The black preacher man was awesome
And I always liked Peter Jason
I was just thinking of this movie a few hours ago as I was driving back from Taco Bell which was closing at midnight.
Got the $7 box but upsized my soda - so there went $7.85 of the $8 I had left on me after going to Walmart for a couple of snack items.
Burp...
Cops always talk about gamer changers but the game never changes.
I ate the chalupa (I think LOL) and the double-layered taco - plus the chips and cheese
The big burrito went into the fridge - drank all the soda and then some - THEN I had some potato chips (because they’re health food you know) and a bit more soda - the fake Dr. Pepper from Walmart
I didn’t eat until about 4pm and it was one of my 2 Quarter Pounders with cheese
Because I used the coupon, I got 2 QP w/cheese night before last, for $5.02 with tax.
I wanted to try McD’s $5 box so I got the McDouble, 4 chicken nuggets, fries and upsized the drink. I think that was like $5.47.
So I got all that food for less than $10.50 at McD. Still have a QP w/cheese for before church tonight Lord willing.
Yeah, the 2 McD’s I regularly go to when I can are the cheapest in my immediate area - there’s one closer but it costs a little more so I hit the other 2 when I’m going that way already.
I won’t mention the purple blueberry yogurt - oops I did
Burp (I actually just did this time LOL)
BS. It’s virtue signaling. They’re trying to give the appearance of doing something about crime instead of cracking down on it irrespective of skin color.

"You drop 'em, we plot 'em."
Beautiful.
I miss McD’s. Only thing I get from there are the sausage egg McMuffins with extra cheese.
Their burgers provide zero energy for me. Guess I ate too much of that when I was younger.
In-N-Out or Carl’s Jr. burgers, though? I’ll have that any day.
The skies of San Francisco - a QM production if he were still alive.
Or as Benny Hill would put it: A Quinn Martin Barton Larton Harton and Fargo Production.
AND within a week or two it will be scrapped for catching too many “criminals of color.”
Only speaking for myself but I am darn tired of being watched everywhere I go. Every road, every intersection, every parking lot, every building door and lobby, every where... Yeah, Minority report is coming next arrested for thoughts (oh wait we are already there).
It is nobody’s business what I am doing, spending, who I am talking to etc... until after the crime (if one) is committed and they do old fashion investigating.
Will they have robot-dog drones with hypodermic needles like in Ray Bradbury’s book “Fahrenheit 4511”?
I have a reoccurring fantasy where a series of global emps or a large flare take out majority of the crap out there and we go back to a time of individual freedom.
“Good plot for a movie.”
Where’s Roger Corman when you need him.

apprehension isn’t the problem ... parts of SF you can’t even walk without stepping on a felon ... the problem is prosecution, conviction, and incarceration ... drones won’t solve THAT problem ...
