SF police tout new drone fleet as a 'game changer' in apprehending criminals

The San Francisco Police Department is touting its fleet of six new surveillance drones as a “game changer” in terms of apprehending criminals.

At a press conference on Tuesday, police officials showed footage shot by drones as they were used to make arrests in two separate auto burglary cases, and to disperse a large crowd that was setting off fireworks in a residential neighborhood on the Fourth of July. Police described the examples as “success stories” of deploying drones for law enforcement.

“Drones have truly been a game changer for our police department,” police Chief Bill Scott said at the press conference. “Think about this: We’ve been without air support for over 24 years, since the early 2000s. And our officers have now a tremendous technology at their fingertips that other law enforcement agencies regularly use.”

The drones are one result of Measure E, a proposition that Mayor London Breed placed on March’s local primary election ballot. That measure, which San Francisco voters approved by a margin of about 9 percentage points, diminished oversight from the city’s Police Commission, changed the parameters for when officers can pursue fleeing suspects and allowed police to deploy certain surveillance technologies without prior approval from the Board of Supervisors.

In addressing a question asked at the press conference about privacy concerns, Scott said the drones — equipped with facial recognition technology — will not fly “passively” around the city. Rather, he said, the drones will only be deployed as part of an active criminal investigation.

For example, in one instance from last month that was shown at the press conference, a stolen car that was being driven was spotted by one of the department’s Flock cameras, colloquially known as license plate readers.

I’m reminded of a story from somewhere concerning a murder case that remains unsolved in the midwest. They found the body in a field with one gunshot right between the eyes at close range. They had nothing until one detective remembered that with a camera, the last thing on the lense was a picture of what was last seen. So he sent a note to the lab guys to check on that. They thought he was nuts so they sent back a close up picture of a bullet. That’s what the drone will see.

Everybody likes job security, but catch and release has to stop. The drones should sink eagle claws into the perps and drop them on Alcatraz Island to be guarded over by solar-powered prison automation until death.

The article states the drones were used against "a large crowd that was setting off fireworks in a residential neighborhood on the Fourth of July".

Oh the horror! Citizens celebrating liberty and their Independence as a nation! Only in San Francisco.

What, will they, scoop down and pluck them up into the sky? Fly them to booking, then the courthouse, then the slammer?

As do I.
Even though it's an admitted middle finger to President Reagan from director John Carpenter.
And I'm a big John Carpenter fan.
(well, except for Ghosts of Mars and Escape From LA -those movies were piles of dog crap)

(Nobody's perfect, though)

Why?

They are not enforcing laws now, so why spend the money?

(Oh, it may be helpful to find out who sold them the drones)
