Many Americans feel that the country has become unrecognizable due to decades of globalization and a technological revolution that has eroded middle-class livelihoods and deepened social divides.
Half the country thinks something has gone drastically wrong in America, to the point that it is rapidly becoming unrecognizable. Millions feel they are virtual lab rats in some grand research project conducted by entitled elites who could care less when the experiment blows up.
Consider: Our military turns over $60 billion in state-of-the-art weapons to terrorists in Kabul and then flees in disgrace?
Terrorist flags fly in place of incinerated Old Glory at the iconic Union Station in Washington as radical students and green card-holding guests deface statues with threats that “Hamas is coming” while spewing hatred toward Jews—and all with impunity?
A wide-open border with 10 million unaudited illegal immigrants?
Once beautiful downtowns resembling Nairobi or Cairo—as paralyzed mayors spend billions without a clue how to remedy the self-created disaster?
Fast food drive-ins priced as if they were near-gourmet restaurants?
In truth, this apparent rapid cultural, economic, and political upheaval is well into its third decade. The disruptions are the results of the long-term effects of globalization and the high-tech revolution that brought enormous wealth into the hands of a tiny utopian elite. Almost overnight, every American household became a consumer of cellular phones and cameras, laptop computers, social media, and Google searches.
We then entered into a virtual, soulless world of hedonism, narcissism, and the cheap, anonymous cruelty of click-bait, cancel culture, doxing, ghosting, blacklisting, and trolling. The toxic COVID lockdown and the DEI racist fixations that followed the George Floyd death only accelerated what had been an ongoing three-decade devolution.

It has been going on for a long time. I think it is much more than 30 years. But, the exponential increase makes it much more apparent today. I hate to think what they will come up with next.

With all due respect Niairobi and Cairo have ancient cultures.

The US is a party to the Convention.
With respect to Hanson, half the country is delighted with how things are going. Millions think they are running the lab.
There is really no virtue to the electoral process. It usually only means that the majority will be happier with the outcome. Rat alterations to this make it less likely.
Limited government was supposed to limit the damage.
“It usually only means that the majority will be happier with the outcome.”
That’s how we govern ourselves, isn’t it?
We know Victor.
BTTT
We all knew this, but nobody writes it as well as VDH. The so-called "compassionate" left always makes sure that their costly policies harm not themselves on the coasts, but middle-America.
Victor Davis Hanson needs to use the word “traitor” whenever he discusss or references ChiComjoe, Kamalamadingdong, or any Demonicrat.
The structure of our government is how we govern ourselves. It is far more than an electoral process. In United States government, much is devoted to limiting and providing a republican indirection to electoral results. Even more indirection is provided by the original construction of the US Senate, to distinguish it from the popularly elected House and to the Presidency.
Still, elections only provide the promise of a majority being happy when they are used. Abused as they are today, they provide not even that.
? ?
I know it seems to be the case. But, really, how do we know? From polls? From election results? We know both can be and have been grossly manipulated by the media and the government.
I rather think we are being gaslit on a continual basis. My opinion is that the real number of those who wholeheartedly support the leftist-woke machine is nearer 20%. My opinion only.
You are right. Roughly three-fifths of the leftist half has been manipulated and taught by the 20% to blame the other half of America for what their 20% has done.
I largely agree with you. I was more trying to turn VDH’s words around the other way. You could similarly argue that he was exaggerating to use the same term.
On the other hand, though, it may be far closer to half than we want to admit. I believe that in America we are seeing politics break down to the nature of Men versus Women. This is since we have decided to have the two vote against each other in politics. Keep in mind that the natures of Men and Women are not tied directly and absolutely to one’s sex. There is overlap.
Still, the result, in times of peace, is going to be close to 50/50.
The gaslighting you refer to, and I include polls in this, is also effective. It allows what may be a minority to sway the majority. The opinions formed are still real.
Duke brothers from “Trading Places”. Bet one dollar on a nature vs. nurture experiment. It’s a comedy, look it up.
Good points.
My opinion is perhaps rooted in my emotional inability to accept what I see happening to our country, our culture, our civilization. This insanity cannot be the real world!
This must be a similation/nightmare of some grotesque sort. That is the best I can come up with to make sense of this utter disaster the world seems to have descended into.
