Any history buffs among us FReepers?

Question: When was the last time a sitting president eligible for re-election nevertheless declined to run, in favor of his vice president?

And what conflicts, tensions, and/or paradoxes might that elicit?

(Let's of course acknowledge that Kamala has not yet received her party's nomination - though, strangely, Biden is talking as though that were a foregone conclusion and/or he was entitled to "pass the torch" to a candidate of HIS choice.)

Regards

Own answer: 1968 (V.P. Hubert Humphrey running for President - LBJ would have been eligible to run himself, but chose not to).

Regards,
