According to Brooks, he was leery about using the n word, but Richard Pryor was a coauthor on the script. It was he who insisted on using the n word. The studio tried to kill the entire movie because Brooks wouldn’t cut some of the offensive but hilarious lines. His contract gave him full control. The movie was a smash hit, but Brooks said it could never be made today. He’s right.

That is, he’s trying to apply today’s cultural norms to what was acceptable yesteryear, but have since changed.
