MILWAUKEE, WI — At the end of former President and U.S. Presidential candidate Donald Trump's 90-minute acceptance speech, the sounds of opera opened with "Nessun Dorma" ("Let No One Sleep"), a majestic musical piece performed by tenor Christopher Maccio.

However, the aria also has a more sinister connotation beyond its original intention in the opera. It is featured in the 2002 film "The Sum of All Fears," based on Tom Clancy's 1991 novel. This political thriller, a sequel to "Clear and Present Danger" (1989), involves CIA Deputy Director Jack Ryan, who attempts to prevent a nuclear war between the U.S. and the Soviet Union circa 1985. Ryan faces entrenched bureaucrats from both sides and a missing nuclear warhead, which each side uses to further their agendas. At the end of the movie, Ryan is triumphant in preventing a nuclear holocaust, and "Nessun Dorma" plays. The camera shifts to various antagonists who meet their deaths by car bombs, throat slashing, and other means.

Trump often claims to be a victim of the deep state or the swamp, and he promises to drain the swamp if elected. Although the violent scenes accompanied by "Nessun Dorma" in "The Sum of All Fears" are intense, they may serve as a hyperbolic metaphor for Trump's campaign rhetoric. Performing it after his triumphant speech at the RNC convention might be one of the most ingenious trolls of all time.
And you want to play “the devil’s advocate”?
I don't think so. Let me answer your scripture with the following events that U.S. Christians enjoined: Revolutionary War, Civil War, WW1, WW2.
"...Trump often claims to be a victim of the deep state or the swamp, and he promises to drain the swamp if elected..."
That is what it is-it says that what we all saw Trump subjected to via state-sponsored lawfare was only something Trump "claims", not what really happened.
Any other word or thought in this opinion piece is suspect.
A lady has cleared up a lot of this.
In the English version the translation to the end of the song is “we will win, we will win, we will win”
Maybe that is why it was used in the “Sum of All Fears”.
>> the o makes it singular i beleive.
In the famous aria “Nessun dorma” from Puccini’s opera Turandot, the character Calaf sings “Vincerò!” (“I will be victorious”) as he looks forward to winning the hand of the princess Turandot.
Luciano Pavarotti did a better version. It was his signature piece.
Nice catch.
And what follows that song and at the opera’s end is peace and love.
Thank you.
And they left out a key aspect of the troll:
Turandot was set in CHINA.
Yes, exactly.
True, but Trump says “we will win” because we are a package deal. LOL
“The Sum of All Fears” is a favorite Clancy novel of mine but I have refused to watch the film version as they needlessly and foolishly changed plot elements to make it politically correct.
Turandot is pretty dark in itself. Nessun Dorma is the Chinese ice-princess (Turandot)’s command that no one in Peking sleep until the name of the Prince whom she is obliged to marry is uncovered. If she learns his name, he will be executed, rather than married. She has the Prince’s father’s female servant tortured, literally to death, but the servant will not yield. Turandot then falls in love with the Prince and they pledge each other eternal love. (It’s an opera.) It opens with the Prince of Persia, an unsuccessful suitor, being beheaded.
I have heard Nessun Dorma at the Trump rallies I've attended, but the significance escaped me. I thought Trump merely liked the music. I haven't seen The Sum of All Fears; maybe that's why. Also I never bothered to translate nessun dorma and think about the meaning.
I wonder if there's a connection to its significance in Turandot.
I’m not a big Clancy fan, I will read this one.
Someone posted that Turandot is in China. Perhaps it’s a double entendre, a warning to both lefties and China.
.
What are the English lyrics for ‘Nessun Dorma’, sung by the young prince?
None shall sleep,
None shall sleep!
Even you, oh Princess,
In your cold room,
Watch the stars,
That tremble with love
And with hope.
But my secret is hidden within me,
My name no one shall know,
No... no...
On your mouth, I will tell it,
When the light shines.
And my kiss will dissolve
the silence that makes you mine!
(Chorus: No one will know his name
and we must, alas, die.)
Vanish, o night!
Set, stars! Set, stars!
At dawn,
I will win!
I will win!
I will win!
The man is magnificent!
There's a place for him in the Trump administration, but the question is where. Certainly not the AG. But something, so as to stick it to the Dem deep-state.
For folks unfamiliar with the opera, a link...

FWIW, I think anyone thinking this is about revenge is way off.
