MILWAUKEE — The assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump has reinforced a sense of unity among top Republicans headed to Milwaukee for this week’s Republican National Convention, a weeklong event that will no doubt feel ripple effects from the attempt to kill the party’s presumptive presidential nominee.
“Delegates were already excited for the RNC in Milwaukee,” said Niraj Antani, a Republican Ohio state senator and a convention delegate. “Now, delegates will go to the RNC feeling a duty to protect President Trump and the values he fights for.”
The assassination attempt Saturday night at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, came at the hands of who the FBI has identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks. The alleged shooter fired multiple shots from a nearby rooftop, narrowly missing Trump, killing one rally attendee, and injuring two more.
“What was already going to be a significant moment of unification behind President Trump will now become the most unified and vocal support for a presidential nominee this nation has ever witnessed,” said Trump-endorsed Miami-Dade County Commissioner Kevin Cabrera, who served on the convention’s platform committee.

Oh yeah, we are a solid thick steel wall now! Landslide!
RINOS like Mitt Romney won’t be there so that’s a great start to the RNC.
If I was in Trump campaign team, I would advise that Trump attend the funeral of the guy killed by bullet meant for Trump and then have same rally at same spot
Susan Collins is writing in Haley; a forever Antitrumper. ME people though can apparently elect anyone better than she.
They better have a serious talk with the RINOs. A very serious talk.
I don’t feel that my seeing this attempt on Trump as AGAIN showing him to be the luckiest person I’ve ever known is a mean or inhumane sentiment - It is a natural reaction. Yes someone tried to hurt him, but he wasn’t hurt. One person died two crucially hurt but not him and now he’s Mr. America. These thoughts aren’t kind but they’re honest and a reaction to living in a pressure cooker for years.
A very disappointing pod. It seems like there's an implication that pro-democracy people need to stop warning about the Trump threat, i.e. lie to people, to "turn the temperature" down. MAGAites and Trump turn the temperature up by lying, but their opponents do it by telling the truth. It's really unfortunate the truth is so terrifying and upsetting, to the point it may provoke violence, but I don't agree we should lie to people who want democracy to keep them docile. Docility is a quality we seek in the animals we eat, not our pro-democracy citizens.
I wasn't one who wanted to unsubscribe over being mad about Biden. But if the Bulwark position is lying to their readers and lying to themselves to tranquilize everyone as a knife looms over them, then yeah, they're done
I cannot believe the Democrats are being blamed for this act of violence. Th Republicans have been extraordinarily irresponsible with the 2nd amendment, immigration, taking away women’s rights… the agenda of MAGA is dangerous to democracy.
I believe it will. Haven’t seen this much unity since 9/11.
Nikki isn’t for me, but having her there at this moment is good politics all around by the GOP
Like most everyone here I’m a political geek and would be watching anyway, but I think lots of people who wouldnt ordinarily will be watching, particularly when he accepts the nomination on Thursday. The rats are about to get a well deserved electoral 2X4 right in the teeth
