No, not correct.
A republic, which is what the USA is, is a representative democracy (where voters choose a representative of their locality or state to make policy votes on their behalf at the organized government levels), as opposed to a pure, or direct, democracy (where everyone votes for every issue, and the majority of voters decides).
You bet they failed.

This appears to be a conspiracy to assassinate in which the feds were likely involved. It looks as if the shooter was the patsy and was always going to be killed, whether a successful assassin or not.

Dana White said as much and so have others. It is obvious in interviews he had in the '80s and '90s. He's not playing political games or acting a part for the crowd. Trump is exactly what he presents as.
His reaction when he was shot is notable too. No fear, no wincing just grabbed the side of his head and had a sort of wtf? kind of look on his face. Then he recognized the situation almost immediately and dropped.

For very good reasons. The people who wrote those documents were well educated in History. Many of them were taught Greek and Latin, and knew the differences between Athenian democracy and the Roman and Dutch Republics. They were deeply aware of what Democracy invariably leads to and that it had to be avoided. The cliche is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for dinner.
