I would think that he certainly did. He was planted on a roof, in the open, with no obvious mess of escaping. I think dying in the end was the climax of his heroic fantasy. The wonder is that he was willing to waste his life on being successful using such a small caliber rifle. Thank God that, while he was dangerous, at the same time he was an idiot.
