‘No Poll Says That’: Biden Digs In as Democratic Fears Deepen
The New York Times | Yaooo ^ | July 12, 2024 | by Shane Goldmacher

Days after President Joe Biden said only the “Lord Almighty” could drive him from the race, he laid out a far more earthly scenario at his closely watched news conference Thursday night: His advisers would have to prove to him that he was headed for certain defeat.

But leaning into the microphone and whispering to dramatize his defiance, Biden made clear that he did not foresee this happening.

He seemed to open the door to an alternative, then swiftly shut it. Sure, “other people can beat Trump,” he said, but it would be too hard to “start from scratch.”

The president’s first news conference since the debate amounted to a competent presentation, if not a compelling performance. But it remained in doubt whether it was enough to stop the bleeding of Democratic support that has threatened to hemorrhage. Minutes after he left the stage, the drip-drip-drip of Democratic members of Congress calling for him to step aside continued unabated.

“I believe I’m the best qualified to govern,” said Biden, who has for decades pointed to naysayers to fuel his own comeback narratives. “And I think I’m the best qualified to win.”

The high-stakes, mostly unscripted hour — Biden’s longest since the debate that sent his candidacy into a tailspin — came as some of those around him have talked about how to persuade him to drop out, and as his campaign has commissioned a survey to test the strength of Vice President Kamala Harris in a matchup he has insisted will never come to pass.

On Thursday, Biden at times flashed his rising frustration with those paid to help him, blaming staff members directly for his overstuffed schedule and obliquely for some of the recent reporting on his candidacy.

Biden’s Captain Queeg moment is still to come...after translating from his future mumbling it will sound something like this.....

“I have had enough of conspirators and insurrectionists who call themselves Democrats plotting against me. Today I have authorized the FBI to conduct raids on the homes of these 127 coup plotters and seize proof of their infamy. I and the American people will have zero tolerance for these traitors.”

It sure looks that way. Biden was defiant in that press conference. And for those hoping for (or in fear of) the kill shot, it just wasn’t there.

And so the steamship Biden sails on. Or should I say, drifts on?

Exactly. At this point if Joe is forced out of the race then he also needs to resign as president, and give the keys to Harris. That is one scenario the Democrat powers that be will not accept. Yeah, they’re deep in a mess of their own creation.

I think the Captain Queeg analogy is appropriate here.

His meltdown was preceded by many “incidents” over a long period of time.

Biden is a ticking time bomb.

Totally agree. The smart move by Team Biden would be to keep him under wraps until Election Day. Come up with a reason not to debate Trump again, keep public statements brief, etc.

But I wonder…there might be members of Team Biden who are under DNC orders to set Biden up for failure.

I agree, the Dems are setting Biden up. It’s too obvious.

That said, the Dems had to have known that Biden has been an egotistical , arrogant A@@HOLE his entire life.

Dementia removes the person’s personal filter and the real crappy personality comes out. Joey being super defiant is a perfect example of an A@@HOLE with dementia.

Between that silly Washington Post poll and his press conference that wasn’t a total disaster, Biden is getting just enough straws to grasp at to stay in the race. Things are going just well enough for him to remain the nominee. Its great.

I find myself agreeing with Biden here, it would be too hard to start from scratch for another candidate. Raising money, organizing, even getting on ballots and election law stuff.

They are in a PICKLE

I sure did. We conservatives know that Biden is a terrible person, and a terrible human being. So we know what a stinking mess we were watching there.

But nothing happened last night to make the average undecided voter feel that way. Biden lied, and made his usual gaffes. But he said nothing that would horrify that undecided voter. Nothing racist. Nothing truly insane.

Good. Let him stay in. The more he tries to “prove” he is coherent and competent, the more he shows how demented and incompetent he actually is.

Those defending him appear increasingly foolish as they try to make excuses for, spin and explain away Old Joe’s obvious mental and physical incapacity.

Shove it down the throats of the American people, especially Democrats, so they get a good, hard look at “their” President, the Leader of the Free World.

You made a proper list of many stupid things SlowJoe did last night. I noticed all of that, too. It disgusted me.

But I don’t think it was enough to repel the average undecided voter. Not enough for them to finally reject Biden in great numbers. In other words, there was damage, but no kill shot. You might think differently. And I respect that.
