People, including many here, have lost any sense of need for self-preservation. I can’t put my finger on what to attribute that to. Always having enough? Not having to struggle to have enough? Not having to work? Always getting a trophy? Absence of competition and survival of the fittest?

IT is GUILT (as you allude to). Specifically, destroying the planet, being involved in horrific wars, living better than the royalty of 100 years ago, let along 1000 years ago.

They are CONVINCED that societal suicide is the ONLY option, and they will make damn sure that no one stops them.

This was illustrated very effectively when Dr. Daystrom installed a computer to run the Enterprise. The computer determined that it was the problem and it took control of the Enterprise and pointed the ship into certain doom, while locking out the crew. It was close, the series nearly ended on that show.
