One documentary version about J. Edgar Hoover said Hoover met with LBJ during the increasingly violent protests, bigger demonstration turnouts and bombs set off by SDS and others and sadly proclaimed “I cannot any longer guarantee the safety of the American people and the holding together of the social fabric if you stay in office and continue the troop escalation.”
