Consider the former Soviet Union's press organs, Pravda and Izvestia. Those words mean 'Truth' and 'News'. The Soviet citizens were on to the lies, and had a joke to mock them: В «Правде» нет известий, а в «Известиях» нет правды, which translates to 'There's no news in "Truth", and there's no truth in "News"'.

The point is, the propaganda channels marched on, even when the populace was well aware of it.
