Israel's left-wing parties have merged, emphasizing that this is not only a technical block. The party list will be chosen in primaries by all members of the parties and any new members.
The liaison team of the Labor Party, led by Yair Golan, and the Meretz party, led by party secretary general Tomer Reznik, have reached a merger agreement to form a party called "The Democrats."
Both parties have pointed out that this is not a "technical bloc," but rather a "historical process that has finally produced one large and united party, a liberal-democratic Zionist party that will be a political home to a large public in Israel; for those who are going out to defend the image and character of the country, as well as for civil entities that are striving to create a better and healthier society."

As much as U.S. liberal Democrats despise Israel, they will do a 180 (or at least head significantly in that direction) once an actual patriotic Israeli, and his party, are finally out of office and Israel can commence full self-destruction.

That is ‘truth in advertising.’ The communist left in Israel is totally beholden to the Democratic Party and I think the name change will hurt them as the Democrats continue to act against Israel the way they do.
The Democrats have a jilted lover syndrome going on. They used to love the Soviet Union but when it crashed and global communism died in Russia they learn to hate Russia.

As a story about two failing political parties merging and rebranding, it's not all that interesting, but in general, i find the Israeli political system fascinating. It's like a reality show, but without attractive people and physical challenges.

Strange reality show. I have never figured the parties out. The Right bloc is supposed to be ultranationalist, but keeps making sweeping concessions. Bibi gave up all but 3% of Hebron. Begin gave up the Sinai. Sharon gave up Ghaza and parts of Samaria. Begin’s son is still in Likud but is super leftist. Same with Meridor’s son.
Shimon Perez, the uberleftist, founded Kiryat Arba. Ben Gurion, Eshkol and Meir went around winning wars.

They didn't really start to embrace capitalism until the '90s. Even then, you see that much of their politics is leftist.
If he did, you’d think that would be a feather in his cap in the left’s eyes.
But they detest him. They love what happened on Oct 7th.
