Occasionally, Japanese kids would approach us to practice their English. The girls would try a few words, giggle, and runoff. Nobody ever thought those girls were flirting; for God's sake, they were kids. The boys occasionally hung out with us, and we bought snacks and drinks and taught them the wrong English words. Okay, that was wrong, but funny.
Before COVID, I went back to visit friends and old haunts. As a retiree, I could have stayed on the base. I chose an Airbnb instead. For two reasons, my friends are Japanese, and the base had just come off a curfew because some idiot tried to rape a Japanese schoolgirl. I spoke to a retiree who thought it was cool to be staying on the base like back in the day. I worked on the base, but I never stayed on the base. During the lockdown, if you were off the base sightseeing, you paid hell getting back on. Once you get back on, you cannot leave.
