Honduras still has a long way to go to dismantle the “narco-state” that grew under ex-president Juan Orlando Hernandez, jailed this week for smuggling a deluge of cocaine into the United States, experts said.
Hernandez, 55, spent years in positions of power cozying up to kingpins from some of Latin America’s most notorious cartels, which placed proxies in state institutions while he pocketed millions of dollars in drug money. Extradited to the United States upon leaving office in 2022, Hernandez was sentenced this week to 45 years in jail for his crimes after prosecutors said he had turned his country into a “narco-state”. Honduras is still picking up the pieces.
“It is impossible to eliminate the narco-state that Juan Orlando built in two years,” said former Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agent Mike Vigil.

From President of Honduras to SuperMax inmate. Noriega’s fate, minus the invasion.
The only way to eliminate the drug cartels in Honduras is via US special forces, without the knowledge of the Honduran govt.
The govt., from top to bottom, as well as all local law enforcement, are under the paid control of the cartels.
The magnitude of the violence there is hard to imagine. The homicide rate in the US, depending on where you are might range from .5-5 deaths annually per 100,000 in population. In Honduras it has recently been as high as 90. Admittedly, parts of Detroit, Chicago, St. Louis and Baltimore are pushing 20+, but there is always a denominator problem in crime rate statistics - what is the relevant area to measure? In any event, the murder rate in Honduras, courtesy of being a drug shipment breakbulk facility for drugs destined to the US, is just hard to get your head around.
Guess the CIA didn’t get their cut....
In Congress since 2010. President from 2014 to 2022. All those years and outta the blue, and finally broke bad.... OR maybe we turned our head for 14 years for some interesting reason?
Paging Nayib Bukele to the red courtesy phone...
The son wasn't involved in drugs, his only mistake was being with the two friends at the time they were kidnapped. It's suspected that the armed security guy that was always with them, may have been involved too.
