PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A Valley woman has a warning for her fellow Tesla drivers after getting trapped in her car.
When its power went out, she had no idea how to get out of her car, and she was far from alone.
Diane has owned her Model Y for about three years without serious complaints.
“Pretty happy,” she said. “It’s a fun car to drive.”
But that changed last month when she tried to go for a drive.
“It was fully charged,” she said. “I unplugged the car, went to get in my car, shut the door, and everything just shut down. I couldn’t open the windows. I couldn’t unlock the doors. I was trapped.”
Diane was stuck inside her car. She wanted to check the owner’s manual to try to figure out what was going on, but that was impossible: the glove box wouldn’t open either.
“I called a friend of mine in the neighborhood and said, you know, can you please come over right away. I’m trapped in the car. He came over he couldn’t figure it out. He says there’s no way to open the car from the outside.”
Diane got on the Tesla app and requested Emergency Roadside Assistance. Eventually they let her know through a text that there’s a secret latch to open the door.
Once she located it, Diane was finally able to get out. “It’s scary,” she said. “It’s very unnerving to say the least.”
Diane’s not alone.
Numerous reports have been made of Tesla drivers being trapped in their cars when the battery dies and all the electronics shut down.
Here’s the problem: like most electric vehicles, Tesla vehicles have a main battery that powers the car and a smaller battery that powers the onboard electronics. That includes the door release and the power windows.
When that battery dies, the doors and windows won’t work.
“There is no warning when it’s low or about to go out,” she said. “So it just shuts down.”
So, where’s that secret latch? You’ll find it on the armrest but on the underside, and it’s completely unmarked.
Diane had no idea it was there. She says she’s talked with several Tesla owners over the past few weeks and they didn’t know about it either.
She was going to plug her phone into the car’s USB port to charge it, but that didn’t work.
I get tired of my 3 year old phone croaking around 6 hours, so I bought a couple of 10,000 mAH power banks a couple week ago. I keep them topped off. So my EV can croak whenever it wants.
Only one problem...I will never own an EV.
Have driven OVER a million miles since 1956.
NO CELL PHONE
PAPER MAPS-— NO GPS
WINDOWS THAT WIND UP & DOWN MANUALLY
CB setup—but have only used that 3 times since buying truck in 1986—used.
No mechanical door latches? Wtf.?
Every Tesla after 2020 has this latch. If you are too Fing stupid to pull up on the most logical place for a door latch than Darwin should prevail good bye and good riddance from our species gene pool hopefully you didn’t breed and spread the defect to other’s. I mean really is this a issue for anyone with over room temperature IQ I think not.
Look how easy this is play the dang video me off commenting I know it’s hard to not knee jerk but play it, literally a person with down syndrome could figure this out that’s sub 70 IQ we used to call them clinically morons the accepted medical term for it.

Play this it’s this simple to get out of a Tesla. If you can’t find this in the obvious spot then do the world a flavor and Darwin out.
Oversized electric golf cart fanbois will not be amused.
But, but, the 0-60 times are teh fastar!!
EV drivers tend to be democrats, so common sense is rare.
And how many people do you think actually read those things?
And even if they do, can they remember all of it? The one for my car is hundreds of pages. Who remembers all of that?
And RTFM
These EV’s are so awesome….
Ha, my son just shared his story a few weeks ago about his taking a Tesla uber. His car was in the shop, the Tesla service was cheaper than other services so he thought he’d give it a try for going to work. Well, his company is at a newly built location which apparently isn’t on Googgle maps just yet. The car went down the right road road but then started going in circles because it couldn’t find the address. My son had to contact their customer service from his cellphone while in the back seat because he couldn’t get out of the moving car. He got them to stop the car and unlock the doors remotely so he could get out and he walked the rest of the way (not too far) to his work. Never again he says, LOL. And this was in AZ too.
First the darn things burn down Randal Cobbs house now this, bad week for the T

It’s this simple, think you could pull this lever? Every Tesla has this on the driver’s door. If someone cannot pull this then good riddance they wouldn’t be able to pull a regular door handle open either why are they driving they should be in a special care home for the mentally or physically challenged.
Wrong there is mechanical it’s inside right where you would expect it to be.

Post 2020 every Tesla has this in the nearly same firm and place it’s such a none issue for anyone with over room temperature IQ.
“Arizona woman trapped in Tesla when battery dies”
Some people are just LUDDITES when it comes to technology. If she doesn’t know how to program-in a command to open the door, why should Tesla be blamed?

What kinds of drugs are you doing. So your son was in the back seat of a Tesla uber that somehow was driving in circles with the driver not present in the front seat? So he had to call support from the back seat while the vehicle was in motion to get it stopped and then have them open the doors so he could walk the rest of the way. This is 100% a lie. First no Tesla uber is ever driverless in a Tesla so the driver in the front seat could have stopped at any point and hit the unlock button on the door. Second customer support couldn’t stop a moving Tesla without a police action request. What you describe is not only a lie but not possible with current FSD nor Tesla operating software.
When cars go out in deep water I’ll bet the safety switch doens’t work either. Same with ICE cars...
You can be skeptical, I was recanting a story my son relayed to me dear, I wasn’t there. When I talk to him again I’ll get more details.
