PARIS, France -- Organizers of the 2024 Paris Olympics promised to take "unprecedented" action for the climate by halving the carbon footprint of previous Games and financing projects to reduce planet-heating greenhouse gasses.
But experts remain skeptical, especially after organizers dropped a pledge to set a hard limit on its overall carbon cost.
About one-third of the heat-trapping emissions from the three-week spectacle is expected to come from transport, with millions of athletes, spectators, staff and journalists flying into Paris.
Organizers opted mostly for pre-existing or temporary infrastructure to host the event, avoiding the significant environmental cost from carbon-intensive building materials like concrete and steel.
But the Games' sustainability credentials took a hit when an initial commitment to set a definite ceiling on emissions at 1.58 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent was dumped.
"The quantified target, which was the big step forward compared to previous Games and was announced with great fanfare, has been abandoned," said Martin Muller from the Institute of Geography and Sustainability at Lausanne University.
"Without a quantified goal, there is no verifiable obligation."
Organizers instead promised that the Olympics would emit half the average emissions of the 2012 and 2016 Games in London and Rio de Janeiro -- an amount Muller said would be 3.9 million tonnes of CO2.
Paris 2024 could "emit 1.95 million tonnes and still say they have achieved their objective" despite "an increase of more than 20 percent compared to the initial target," he said.

Swim in the Seine for Urf?
If they cared about the planet they would abolish the Olympics.
Athletes flying in from all over the world probably use more energy than the annual output of many small African nations.
They are all slimy hypocrites.
Well, I’d avoid the French women—hairy armpits, no baths, nor deoderant.
If you're a swimmer and you're willing to swim in the Seine River, you deserve the Darwin Award.
Why? Is CO2 released from burning JET-A harmful to the planet?
If they cared about the planet, they would not be promoting pseudoscience.
Enserio? What are they planning to do-sacrifice a few athletes to the climate gods in a big ceremony?
According to the eco-kooks everything humans do is harmful to the planet.
That is why they want us dead.
They have no clue climate is weather and that we live on a carbon based planet ,LOL
1) Maintain humanity under 500,000,000 in perpetual balance with nature....
10) Be not a cancer on the Earth – Leave room for nature – Leave room for nature.
Apparently, they want to leave 500 million ... probably (sex) slaves to serve their every whim.
Climate is long-term average weather.
And it changes.
Slowly, but continuously.
We just got out of the "Little Ice Age" which ended around 1850. Before that, we had the "Medieval Warming Period".
Does it look less grim on a sunny day?
If they are serious, perhaps trying to eliminate US should be replaced by eliminating themselves.
Imbecilic buffoons. The emissions from tanks, APCs, missiles, jets, etc. in Ukraine alone are dwarfing any of these stupid symbolic gestures.
Environmentalists believe that everything in nature is part of the environment, except man.
1. No air conditioning in Olympic Village. No electricity. Water only from hand-served wells.
2. World-class athletes are going to have to set an example by eating only bugs and raw vegetables grown in gardens fertilized by human excrement.
3. No air travel - wherever they're from, they have to hike there. This may be a problem for the Micronesia, Australian, and Greenland teams. Too bad.
4. No breathing hard during events. Because CO2.
5. Gold, silver, and bronze medals must be returned to the earth they came from. Paper certificates are tree-killers. Maybe a golf clap and a smile will do.
6. Wait on that last: no one, absolutely no one, must smile or cheer or express approval in any way. Joy is wasteful and forbidden.
This post is Klaus Schwab approved.
Just give them the olive wreath.
