Surging violence in Haiti from clashes with armed gangs since March has displaced nearly 580,000 people, according to a new report from the U.N. migration agency, a sobering figure that underscores the magnitude of the Caribbean nation’s crisis.
Haiti has long faced unrest but at the end of February, gangs unleashed coordinated attacks with gunmen taking control of police stations, opening fire on the main international airport that remained closed for nearly three months and stormed Haiti’s two biggest prisons.
A report released on Tuesday by the International Organization for Migration said the displacement of more than half a million is mainly due to people fleeing the capital of Port-au-Prince for other provinces, which lack the resources to support them.
In March, the agency reported more than 362,000 internally displaced people in Haiti. Since then, the violence has more than doubled the number of internally displaced in the southern region — already ravaged by a 2021 earthquake — from 116,000 to 270,000.
“Nearly all those internally displaced are currently hosted by communities already struggling with overburdened social services and poor infrastructure, raising further concerns about tensions with the potential to spark further violence,” the report said.
With more than 2,500 people killed or injured across Haiti in the first three months of the year, Haiti’s National Police, understaffed and overwhelmed by gangs with powerful arsenals, has been unable to bring the situation under control.

The best scenario would be to resettle the Haitians to Guinea in Africa and let the Dominican Republic takeover the rest of the island.
They lack diversity.
Not our problem.
Checking my meter, nope still don’t care.
Barbecue must be feeling bloated
Maybe the Clinton foundation could help out...
The only way to fix it now is to go to war with the gangs and eliminate every one of them. No half-measures and no UN blue hates. Just go in there with as much military armaments needed and eliminate them.
yes, maybe Liberia would take them in....
Where do you think those 580,000 "displaced" people are going to end up?
I do care about the little children and the poor mothers, but what can you do when savages run the island....there is no reasoning with them....
They’re here & they’re hangry
Give the gangs one week to surrender unconditionally and then march in unreservedly.
You can not care all you want, but Haitian refugees are coming to America if Haiti can’t be fixed. You will care if you want to or not.
Those Haitians will soon be coming to the U.S., claiming refugee status.
Ukrainian drones could reduce the gang problem at little risk to US troops.
HAITIAN LAW 2024-1
The President of Haiti may declare curfews from time to time with at least two hours notice via radio and TV broadcasts.
All civilians in Haiti must not carry weapons except on their own property during curfew periods.
The US and Haitian military may take appropriate action against persons violating the curfew, including killing them by drone. At least 12 persons must approve each drone attack.
“Just go in there with as much military armaments needed”
Ukrainian drones work well.
Very minimal risk.
I like it.
Basic consumer drones could be used to intimidate gangs.
Lucky they got the clintoon foundation to help.
