Russians seem to think the US is the focus of evil in the modern world and is responsible for restiveness among its Muslims. Thing is - Russia’s 20% Muslim minority live in a Jim Crow world, where Muslims are systematically discriminated against, where overt “Slavs only” policies deny housing, jobs and promotions to Muslims. The surprise isn’t that they’re acting up, but that they’ve been compliant for so long.

If they can’t have equality within the Russian empire, they will try to remove the Russian yoke from their ancestral lands. The Russian empire’s subject peoples understand that Russia won’t leave peaceably, that it will have to be evicted by force.
