“if Putin wanted to win over Ukraine, why did he need to do it by force?”

Putin probably made an ultimatum and Ukrainians let the clock tick too long.

“This morning, the British ambassador in Berlin handed the German government a final note stating that unless we heard from them by 11 o’clock that they were prepared at once to withdraw their troops from Poland, a state of war would exist between us. I have to tell you now that no such undertaking has been received, and that consequently this country is at war with Germany.”

Neville Chamberlain

You gotta be kidding!

An ultimatum with the threat of 200,000 Russian troops on the Ukr/Russian border? 200,000 troops was not an ultimatum; it was a sure sign that an invasion was coming, and that invasion was made possible by the weakness of the president of the U.S. and the hopeful waiting by the NATO countries who did not believe that Putin would go through with the invasion. Putin go the go-ahead from the U.S. and NATO, and now, Ukraine and Russia are suffering the consequences of the wishy-washy foreign policy of NATO/U.S.
