Conservative border hawks slam Trump’s college green card vow for foreign students

Former President Donald Trump has floated green cards for all foreign students who graduate from US universities and junior colleges in a podcast interview — prompting hardline immigration advocacy groups to lash out at what they called a “cockamamie proposal.”

“You graduate from a college, I think you should get automatically, as part of your diploma, a green card to be able to stay in this country, and that includes junior colleges too,” Trump, 78, told “The All-In Podcast.”

Jason Calacanis, one of several Silicon Valley tech investors who hosts the podcast, prompted the response when asking whether the 45th president would “promise us you will give us more ability to import the best and brightest around the world to America.”

Mark Krikorian, the executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies, told The Post that the green-card handout was “a cockamamie proposal” that would unleash a “firehose of foreign cash” by effectively “stapling a green card to the diploma” of any US college graduate.

“If someone earns a PhD. at a university in a hard science, I personally will drive to their house and give them a green card,” Krikorian said. “The issue is any foreign college graduate, even from a bogus two-year master’s program or gender studies [major], would get a green card.

“If this proposal were adopted, you would see an explosion of quickie, one-year master’s programs around the country as a way of selling green cards to foreigners,” he added, which lobbyists and others would “exploit” to earn profits from potentially “billions of people around the world.”

“There’s no percentage limit for any particular institution,” Krikorian concluded. “Foreign students are one of the drivers of immigration because if you come here to study from Yemen or Cameroon, why would you want to go back?”

This will undercut American college students and provide a path to legalize illegal aliens. It sounds like a liberal Democrat proposal. Is this Trump's border security policy?

I will give up on Trump if he pushes this.

This has been a disaster in Canada - strip mall colleges recruit third world students who get legal residence in Canada and never show up to the school.

Some restrictive, highly controlled version of this could make sense, but likely would just be abused and manipulated.

Too many student visas to begin with, taking seats in college that should be used by US citizens. Student visas should end upon graduation and the graduates should go home and not be allowed back for 10 years. We don't need them, we need to open up jobs for our graduates.

If a school gets federal funds, they should be required to show that there is not US candidate for that seat before giving it to a non-citizen, else lose federal funding. Yes, that would mean 99% of student visas would end. That's a win-win for the US.

What’s a “border hawk?” Is it what used to be called a typical American citizen 40 years ago?

Trump said US universities. They’re young, ambitious and will work a long time. Just look at all the folk from India starting companies. No mention of gender studies majors. The tired and poor will be smarter. We need more brains here. Flush out the welfare recipients and gang bangers. Anchor babies. This may be our only chance.

America needs the STEM smarties. The criminals and dopes need to be deported. Both the illegals AND native born woketards.

American might need them but the H1-B visa is inherently unfair in that it gives employers the power to have indentured servants for 7 years and drastically undercut American wages. I take it that you profit from undercutting Americans.

The H1B visa program was originally developed to allow companies to hire foreign professionals and American educated foreign grad students with special technical skills not available in the US labor pool to fill vitally needed slots.

A typical example would be a foreign student who just received his PhD from MIT doing ground breaking research in Nano Materials . There is no American option because this PhD just invented the technology in question.

We need to recruit and retain these people.

They do not take jobs from Americans, they help build cutting edge high tech industries that keep America on the cutting edge of technical innovation. These new industries creat hundreds of thousands of new good paying jobs for Americans.

More importantly, retaining these highly skilled people in the United States makes sure the technology is developed and commercialized here in the US and not in China or some other country.

The unfortunate fact is that any government administered program eventually is abused and becomes a fraud perpetrated on the American people. Somehow we need to develop polices that strengthen America

Give this suggestion a few days to shake out. Trump is suggesting another path to LEGAL immigration. The Green Cards for Graduates program numbers can be offset by fewer H-1B visas for all these lying companies who just want more cheap labor. Would you rather have graduates, or what H-1B brings?

The reason for so many foreign students is that they pay a huge tuition. IIRC, it’s thousands higher than out of state tuition. And they get no breaks. Not agreeing with it, just giving a major reason.

Schools should be limited on the number of foreign students visas, and there should be 100% tariff on those students. Plus, that visa should include mandatory departure from the US when schooling is done. No conversions whatsoever.

.....“If someone earns a PhD. at a university in a hard science, I personally will drive to their house and give them a green card,”.....

Yes, if the degree is from a Harvard, an MIT, or a Stanford, and if the student is not a communist, a muslim, or a Palestinian supporter!!!!

Otherwise-—no way!

This is the price Trump paid for Silicon Valley Support………SPIT!! I do have to wonder however how many of these American kids are majoring in the sciences, math, ect. I am seeing more and more of these damn kids majoring in NONSENSE courses that can’t be used in the real world!! HOW MANY white Doctors have you seen lately, how many white dentists have you seen lately, as far as tech is concerned I don’t know!! I would go along with this IF it was the LAW that equally qualified American citizens HAD TO HAVE priority over foreign candidates!! I just haven’t seen OUR KIDS putting their nose to the grindstone as far as the sciences are concerned, LIKE a Dr. Ben Carson did!

The death of the American dream was convincing people that you need a college degree to start a business....or do anything besides work at a gas station or McDonald’s.

This mentality was pushed on the boomers and it’s only gotten worse since.

It’s sad that people don’t even know that in 1950 only 7% of Americans had college degrees, and yet America was an economic technological and cultural superpower.

It was the British who who had a system of sizing up young students to see who was upper management or middle management material.

This is not the American way! And yet we’ve been shepherded into believing that it is.

F that! We are and have been letting in 1 MILLION LEGAL IMMIGRANTS per year! Go to any defense contractor in the country and you will see at least half employees were not born in America and English is their second language. I’ve had to work with people in this country who barely speak any English at a defense contractor.
