Why? If the alphabet crowd is so proud why do they try to hide it, to keep it from parents and the public at large?

Kinda weird. Are the parents not going to know if the child comes home wearing dresses and make up. Or suit and tie for the girls? I find it hard to believe the parents won’t know.
