Sorority and fraternity people really do “identify” as a member of that group. The fraternity ring is an entry to a lot of jobs or other social groups. Also, there may be a substantial amount of money willed to the sorority or fraternity and having control over that is a lot of power to give up. For those of us not involved in the fraternity or sorority lifestyle it’s a “meh” thing. But to them it’s as much a part of their lives as a marriage or job for the rest of us. My cousin would meet a stranger with the “ring” in a bar or on a plane and it was like they were instant lifelong buddies.
