The closest he made it to was Baja, California in Northwest Mexico.

Tenochitlan (Mexico City today) is not in Northwest Mexico.

You might want to look up Cortez and the Aztecs.

In 1536, Cortés explored the northwestern part of Mexico and discovered the Baja California peninsula. Cortés also spent time exploring the Pacific coast of Mexico. The Gulf of California was originally named the Sea of Cortés by its discoverer Francisco de Ulloa in 1539. This was the last major expedition by Cortés.
You might want to study up on Cortés a little more.   He was in Mexico from 1518 to 1541 which gave him plenty of time for expeditions far afield.

The thought just occurred to me that you may not realize that Baja California, is a state in Mexico. It is the northernmost and westernmost of the 32 federal entities of Mexico.
