Hundreds of thousands of immigrants in the U.S. will count their blessings on Saturday as they mark a new anniversary of a program that has let them stay in the country, study and work and build lives.
Millions more who arrived here as children and don't qualify for it are wishing they'd been so lucky.
The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, program began 12 years ago Saturday. While its beneficiaries hope to have had a permanent legal status in the U.S. by now, they also are celebrating the educations, better paying jobs, families and homes they've been able to build and the freedom from fear of arrest and deportation that came as a result of President Barack Obama's executive order.
But their commemoration is sobered by the possibility that Republicans will succeed in their legal and political battle to end DACA. Donald Trump, who tried to end DACA and stopped new applications, could be re-elected president.
DACA recipients also recognize that they are outnumbered by the more than a million young immigrants who could have qualified for DACA, but have been denied because of Republican-led battles to end it and a halt on new DACA applications.
By 2025, no undocumented high school graduates will qualify for DACA because they will have entered the U.S. after the required arrival to the U.S. of June 15, 2007, according to FWD.US, a progressive group that focuses on immigration and criminal justice.

Bye-bye!
They aren’t “immigrants”. They are thieving freeloaders.
1.6 million American citizens are cursing, their jobs having been eliminated or offshored.
Oh, the huge manatee.
Our mainstream media is past despicable and is now totally irrelevant. Journalism, when you failed studies classes and still wanted a degree.
Let it die. America first, America only, America for Americans.
Strange, I recall that Trump offered amnesty to the DACA “kids” back a few years ago, and the Dems rejected it?
Most of the original DACA kids are pushing 40, and at some point you gotta wonder why they haven’t gotten their own green cards.
Such wonderful people!
I’m sure their native countries would be grateful to have them back.
¡Prepare la maleta!
Every time DACAhas come up in Congress or in the courts it has lost. It’s time for all of these people and their families to be deported.
Where’s my violin?
Suzanne Gamboa sure makes a lot of assertions about the hundreds of thousands of DACA migrants. How does she know what they think? Or that a million people have uniform ideas and behaviors (in this case miraculously all good). Whether they have jobs, educations, etc.? Mebbe she just cherry-pick a few success stories and project dreamer propaganda from there...
I’d like to see a real study of achievements, crimes, incomes, taxes paid, and costs to federal, state, and local taxpayers.
Deport EVERY illegal no matter how long they have been here.
They aren’t “immigrants”. They’re illegal aliens who have no respect for American laws.
All is not as it seems. Despite the successful framing of DREAMers and DACA recipients as young people with no criminal records, it turns out that many were affiliated with gangs and many had arrest records when granted DACA benefits, and many others saw their DACA status terminated because of criminal activity. As USCIS has admitted, “[t]he truth is that we let those with criminal arrests for sexually assaulting a minor, kidnapping, human trafficking, child pornography, or even murder be provided protection from removal.”
And the criminality of the youth involved can be determined by the United States Immigration services:
USCIS may consider deferring action in your case even if you have been arrested or detained by any law enforcement officer and charges were filed, or if charges were filed against you without an arrest. USCIS will evaluate the totality of the circumstances in reaching a decision on deferred action.

So even though the “immigrant” fits the determination of a criminal action that should get them deported as described by congress, they are allowed to stay by the determination of an act by a clerking organization used to process the forms that determine their crimes the reasons for deportation.

They are also celebrating taking those jobs and other benefits away from Americans. Tell me that giving them healthcare and other benefits (e.g., Social Security) wasn't just a move to buy votes with our tax dollars.
I have always thought the kids that ended up here as minors because of their parents lawlessness might deserve a break but only if the parents that brought them were immediately and permanently deported.
Democrats are in the poverty business they are just the new poor plantation bodies for the next 5 decades abort now.
The author should have expressed her views more clearly:
"Those dastardly, xenophobic, racist Republicans are standing in the way of letting in the beautiful brown people. They just hate anybody without white skin."
DACA aka Dumb Ass Citizenship Award
Should be called CACA....Criminals About Committing Atrocities.
