It came to light this week that the Russian missiles were made operational by the inclusion of American made chips. At present, Russia lacks the capability to manufacture automobiles, even the old soviet era joke called the Ludka

As always Russian fear prevailed and to reestablish a buffer against European invasion. Putin attempted what he thought was going to be an easy capture of Ukraine.

And now Russian ships and one sub armed with hypersonic missiles are in Cuba. How could one defend what has transpired to create such a dangerous situation?

Dangerous situation? How so? A couple ships is close to zero danger to us. Even if they actually launched something, a pair of ships can't carry enough ordnance to do a serious amount of damage. (Ignoring nuclear weapons, of course.) "Hypersonic" missiles doesn't mean much - in fact, they're less dangerous. Increasing speed capability means less volume for the warhead. Faster, but not nearly as big of an effect. And they still get shot down just the same.

...Why can't they be shot down? The only difference between a hypersonic missile and a 'regular' missile is it's going faster. So, unlike women and kids, you just lead it more. The complication comes from the reduced time - the faster it goes, the less time you have to detect and engage. And frag-style interceptors are a lot less effective (side-kill isn't very likely) but the Patriot is hit-to-kill, so that's moot.

We've shot down ballistic missiles for years now with THAAD and PAC-3. Those are hypersonic. Non-ballistic testing has been successful, although that is an ideal scenario, very biased situation. DoD has confirmed that at least one of the Russian Kinzhals has been successfully intercepted, and Ukraine claims it's shot down something like 10-15 more.

I don't dismiss the threat of hypersonics, but yes, I certainly minimize it from most people's idea that they are a golden bullet that can kill anything you point it at.

The Russian Navy is in terrible shape. Their only carrier can't even go in the water right now. Most of the fleet is small patrol-type stuff (destroyer and smaller) and counter-mine ships.

The only half-decent stuff Russia has is her subs, but even most of those are getting decently old.

The only good stuff is their icebreaker fleet, and maybe a couple of the subs.
