The distinction between the public and private facets of life is a polite convention that modern biographers and historians disregard so as to better assess the entire person. And we have reason to be grateful that he vetoed a US invasion of Cuba, infuriating the highest echelons of the US military in doing so. The US was unaware at the time that such an invasion would likely have triggered the firing of Soviet nuclear weapons in Cuba on the US, followed by a general nuclear exchange.
