Putin offers truce if Ukraine exits Russian-claimed areas and drops NATO bid. Kyiv calls it 'absurd'

Russian President Vladimir Putin promised Friday to “immediately” order a cease-fire in Ukraine and begin negotiations if Kyiv started withdrawing troops from the four regions annexed by Moscow in 2022 and renounced plans to join NATO. Ukraine responded by calling Putin’s proposal “manipulative” and “absurd.”

Putin’s remarks came as Switzerland prepared to host scores of world leaders -- but not from Moscow -- this weekend to try to map out first steps toward peace in Ukraine.

They also coincided with a meeting of leaders of the Group of Seven leading industrialized nations in Italy and after the U.S. and Ukraine this week also signed a 10-year security agreement that Russian officials, including Putin, denounced as “null and void.”

How much of your house are you willing to let an invader keep?

If they have more people and guns they get to keep the whole thing.

If they are threatening my family's lives then I take as many of them with me before they can take me out.

But what part of this ends well?

To turn the analogy back what has Ukraine gained other than killing off a large portion of their young men? The invaders are still there.

"You can be opposed to funding for Ukraine without cheerleading for Putin."

You'll be hard-pressed to find me or most of the long-time members here who have been cheerleading for Putin, and you didn't provide a screen name or names for those you believed were cheerleading for him. As I said earlier on this thread, those who accuse us of being Putin Trolls, actually mention the man's name far more than any of us ever do. Most of us don't give a rat's ass about Russia or Ukraine. We are opposed to billions of dollars in unaccounted-for tax payer money being sent for yet another proxy war with Russia, especially to a country that is of no national security interest to the United States. My national security interest is the borders of this country, not some foreign country the size of Texas that sits 5,000 miles away.

Jane Fonda did the worst thing anyone could do. She literally went to North Vietnam in 1972, and fraternized with the enemy while Americans were being killed. Bill Clinton when he was at Oxford went to Russia, the same country we were fighting a proxy war with back then. Russian bullets were killing American soldiers at the time. And John Kerry went to France during the peace talks in 1970 while Americans were still being killed, and met with North Vietnamese representatives.

As far as I know, none of us opposed to the funding has flown to Moscow to meet with Putin or have him on fast-dial. My only brother was a Vietnam Vet. He was there with the U.S. Army in 1966-67, and was already back home and discharged from the service before any of those a-holes played their stupid games, but it still ticked me off when hearing about what they did, and still does.

FR realists say negotiate along these lines.

FR warmongers say No Way - continue the killing.

Russia should be allowed to hold on to all of Russia that it held before invading Ukraine.

This might be too radical. It creates a threat to security. I believe a reasonable compromise is that Russia will be demilitarized, all Russians will be shipped to east of Urals except for those living in Moscow, who will be executed for their crimes. The land between Europe and Urals is to be salted and acts as a buffer zone. Anyone entering that land will be shot.

That's a pretty reasonable plan and since neither side will be happy, then that's how you know it is right.

The people of Ukraine are lovely people, as are the Russian people. But, the government of Ukraine has done more to corrupt US politics than any other country recently. At least we know where Putin stands. Zalensky, equally evil pretends to be our friend. Some believe him.
