Republican strategist says Latinos are the new "Reagan Democrats"

A growing part of the Latino electorate is relating less to the Democratic Party and more to the GOP because of blue-collar economic issues, an anti-Trump Republican consultant says in an upcoming book.

The big picture: The gradual shift makes Latinos the new "Reagan Democrats" — moderate Democrats in the 1980s who supported President Ronald Reagan — and may change assumptions of race and politics that both parties aren't prepared to face, author Mike Madrid argues.

Zoom in: Madrid's "The Latino Century: How America's Largest Minority is Transforming Democracy," is set for release on June 25 by Simon & Schuster.

The book is based on Madrid's three decades as a GOP political consultant in California and his observations of how Latino voting patterns have shifted — often confusing both parties. The former Lincoln Project member decided to write it after seeing Democrats and Republicans repeatedly misreading Latino voters and ignoring their concerns. What they're saying: "Republicans are winning this (Latino working class) vote despite their best efforts, not because of it," Madrid tells Axios.

Bien-entonces no lo compres-that is up to you. My family came to to what is now Texas from Mexico before 1800-so I’m a card carrying Native born Texas Hispanic. The last democrat my parents voted for was JFK-not because he was a dem-because he was Catholic. LBJ and all the rest were criminals as far as they were concerned. Of course many/most of us are rural people who own small businesses and don’t get welfare or other handouts, which may have something to do with being conservative.

I realize your state was never a part of Spanish territory like the Southwest and most of the West were-so you do not have the large number of Hispanic families whose ancestors have been there for a couple of centuries and are Native-born Americans for many generations-it does make a difference in people’s politics...

At lot of Latino Americans are in the building trades. Thanks to Biden, when they fill up their work trucks, there goes half a day's wages.

The author is correct. The GOP will win more hispanic votes this year, in spite of themselves. Instead of welcoming Hispanics on board, people here seem to want to do everything to discourage them. I suspect the rest of the establishment gop will do the same.
