Interesting history of China's foreign direct investment (FDI). This may be the most telling metric on the international investment climate vis-a-vis China. - After peaking in 2014 the bloom was off the rose. - Its not clear that the Trump administration had much effect on Chinas FDI. - It does seem likely that the Biden administration encouraged a resurgence post-2020. That could also be a Covid reaction, so unclear. - However, the intensification of Chinese war talk has pretty well eliminated FDI, after mid-2022. The moneymen seem to have received very bad news. Its not easy to openly disinvest from China, given Chinese laws and regulations. There likely has been a large increase in capital flight from China, but its hard to put a number on it.

Statista

statement by C. Testor According to data published in China’s balance of international payments (BOP), quarterly foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows to China amounted to around 10.3 billion U.S. dollars in the first quarter of 2024. In the third quarter of 2023, inward FDI flows became negative for the first time since the start of the published timeline in 1998, with foreign investors pulling out more money out of the country than they invested.

I apologize. It seems that the first time it comes up in a search its free to see. Later its behind a paywall.

I will see if it can be posted in some other way. It does show for a while when you click on it.

Or try this - same data, scroll down a bit.
