He probably hasn't studied German or Russian. In English, gender applies only to pronouns. In German, it applies to nouns, and in Russian, gender also applies to verbs. The gender of most nouns in Russian is obvious by their spelling, but unfortunately, that's not the case for German.
Actually in modern English there are no grammatical genders, only holdovers in sex based pronouns and masculine generalizations (eg mankind, man, and using he/him as a pronoun for an unknown person).
