... Forty-six percent of Americans say they are "not too likely or not at all likely to purchase" an EV, according to a recent poll by The Associated Press -NORC Center for Public Affairs Research and the Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago.
Earlier this year, luxury German automaker Mercedes delayed its electrification plans by five years, with CEO Ola Kaellenius telling investors the company was still committed to producing combustion engine cars. Last month, Toyota executives announced its engineers were developing smaller, next-gen engines that can run on alternative fuels like liquid hydrogen.
Industry insiders are calling the trend "return to ICE," or internal combustion engines.
"Maybe there was a little bit of a hype [around EVs]. There are challenges with an all EV world," McKeel Hagerty, CEO of Hagerty, an automotive enthusiast brand, told ABC News. "There's a place for EVs for people who really want them, especially the high-performance ones, but they don't seem to be selling and I think that tells us something."
Tony Quiroga, editor-in-chief of Car and Driver and co-host of the magazine's new "Into Cars" podcast, noted that EVs can work for some Americans though the inconvenience of charging can outweigh the pros.
"Everyone who wanted an EV has one now," he told ABC News.

China BYD has a Toyota Camry sized hybrid that just demonstrated 108mpg and it is $13,000 in China. It also has the most advanced and efficient gasoline engine in production anywhere at any price. It’s a plug in hybrid as well goes 50 miles on a charge then 1300 more on 17 gallons of gasoline. The pack in it is the LFP blade pack which cannot burn it has been shown live video to have a steel spike completely through it and it just sits there. We will never see it here because of the UAW goons. You couldn’t keep a $13,000 full sized sedan let alone one that gets over 100mpg in the city while only needing it’s engine after 50 miles of travel which for Americans covers 99% of all trips per the DOT. I have links to the real world testing of that car in China in a city of 7 million so not on a track but in real world traffic over 100km year run. Impressive tech to say the least.
China’s BYD has a Toyota Camry sized hybrid that’s a plug in and consumers tested it in a city of 7 million in real world traffic they got the equivalent of 108mpg over a 100km test run. Oh and it retails for $13,000 American that alone would bankrupt every American automaker. You couldn’t keep a full sized sedan on a dealer lot selling for $13k new hybrid or not. Check my past posts I have the links to the real world testing. China is going to sell them in Mexico I am probably going to use a Mexican address to buy and register one down there via an LLC then just cross the border by lamd. Texas doesn’t blink at Mexican plates anymore they are everywhere. With a plug in 50 mile range that’s 95% or more of my daily driving. I’ll return the Tesla since it is on lease and keep the plug in while also selling the S60 who’s only purpose is 600+ mile one way trips the BYD does 1300+ miles to a tank so double the S60
“... Forty-six percent of Americans say they are “not too likely or not at all likely to purchase” an EV, “
That number is preposterous. The number is much, much higher. I don’t know how they rigged it to get 54% to say they want an EV but it is a lie.
Plug in electrics will never be more than a niche item.“
If left to just market forces that is true but the rats are committed to regulating ICE cars off the roads.

“Or so the Germans would have us believe!”
Sorry...no sale. I’ll walk before I buy a Chinese made,or Chinese designed,car.
The gas mileage my cars get is fine, even the ‘08 pickup.

Oh man...as a kid, I fondly remember those Briggs & Stratton 5-HP upright engines. The perfect complement to homemade go-carts, scooters.
“Rimac CEO Matt Rimac acknowledged that wealthy drivers have shown little interest in his heavily trumpeted Nevera hypercar, which can generate a staggering 1,914 hp from four electric motors. Limited to 150 units, the Croatian company has struggled to find buyers.”
Daum! Just what I always wanted! A REALLY, REALLY, REALLY expensive EXTREMELY LIMITED edition CROATIAN all electric “sports” car! [would probably need to buy two of ‘em anyway to guarantee spare parts]
and if the skateboard platform gets dinged during a fender-bender or a bad pothole or road bump, the auto might have to totaled because the battery inside is a black box and no one can determine how bad, if at all, the battery might be damaged ...
“as we keep driving older, better and less expensive cars that do not spy on us.”
that’s where i’m at ...
““Pricing, infrastructure, and range were the top three reasons consumers listed for not purchasing an EV,” S&P Global Mobility said. “For some consumers, having a traditional ICE or hybrid vehicle is a way to hedge against some of these obstacles.””
an even cheaper hedging method is to avoid purchasing an EV in the first place ... THAT strategy hedges 100% AND has ZERO cost!
That’s one big disadvantage of the EV that could be stopped. Like a buyer of a normal ICE vehicle, let the EV buyer pay full dealer price. No reason they should be subsidized, except for Biden saying so. Seems to me like he was the one who really started all this foolishness with EVs. No wonder the taxpayer is getting the short end of things nowadays & this is completely unnecessary. Can’t wait for these crates to start hitting the used market & then we can really see what they are (not) worth. I can just envision one of them on a used car lot catching fire & then proceeding to set the whole lot on fire! It would be even worse if it was stored separately indoors.
Tells me that some people apparently go through their whole lives not based in reality.
A local dealer here has started selling electrics from Vietnam.
The next big thing will be hydrogen. Musk is already into it.
Even if most people WANTED to buy EVs, would we have the electrical capacity for it? The electrical grid would have to be massively grown to support widespread adoption of EVs.
"Gas Guzzler" is an anti-freedom propaganda term invented by the Jimmy Carter administration.
