By all accounts, insofar as war is concerned, he’s far less hawkish than a lot of prominent Russians are, politically speaking.

That’s quite a risk. I liken this to a bunch of employees hating their boss and wishing he’d be replaced. They get their wish and the new boss is 10 times worse than the one that left.
My point is we have no control over who will replace Putin should he depart. The replacement could make Putin look like an angel and actually do a first nuke strike without any warning or provocation.
