Islamic centers are popping up like mushrooms all over New Jersey and where it was once rare to see an overt Muslim person, it is now fairly common. Not sure where these folks came from but within a relatively short period of time, they are now here in significant numbers.

Until my 2010 retirement, I was a 150,000+ miles/year business air traveler.
I seemed to me that after 9/11, people from largely Muslim countries were now running the airport kiosks and ground service. Perhaps they had been there all along and now, because of the terrorist attack on 9/11, I was more "aware" of them.
My oddest remembrance was corporate limited our travel after 9/11 due to concerns of another attack. When we finally were allowed to travel more normally (a month or so after) I flew to Philadelphia as had been done by me dozens of times.
Upon checking into a hotel I regularly stayed at, the reception desk was staffed by a woman in full black burka, complete with gun slit face mask. I asked to see the manager and told him that his lack of sensitivity meant I would never stay there again. And for that matter, this "platinum elite" member wrote a letter to the chairman of the chain with my frequent guest card and told him the same.
